Click the link below to read the full article or scroll down for full article : Artist in focus > Hsin Lin Published date: 25/04/2024. By PosterFactory. Meet HSIN LIN “My art captures the beauty and serenity of floral motifs, each with its own unique story and symbolic meaning.” HSIN LIN, a Melbourne-based award-winning artist, specialises in contemporary floral paintings. Her signature series, featuring both native and common flowers, embodies beauty and serenity, capturing the intricate details and symbolic meanings of each bloom. Lin’s art is a vibrant reminder of life’s potential and the power of nature. How many years have you been creating and showcasing your art? I’ve been devoting myself to my signature contemporary floral series for the past 10 years. Each flower I paint represents life and has a unique symbolic meaning. How would you describe the style and themes of your work? My art captures the beauty and serenity of floral motifs. The fine details, such as the tiny petals, are developed through ten or more layers of paint. Although still-life is considered a traditional genre, each object in my paintings stands for a different meaning and has its own story Are you earning from your art? I was featured in Australia Artist’s Palette magazine in 2017, which was a turning point for me. My work has been recognized in various local art shows, and my artworks are held in private collections both in Australia and internationally. Selling through galleries and online has allowed me to reach a larger audience. What feedback have you received so far? My collectors often tell me that my work is the first piece that grabs their guests’ attention. People enjoy the beautiful details from afar or up close, and a great statement piece can be a conversation starter. Do you have a day job? Or are you a full-time artist? I am a full-time artist. Any upcoming projects? I recently launched the LTD ED Prints of my latest award-winning artwork: A Thousand Ways to Love – Acorn Banksia, Eucalyptus, Amaranthus, Celosia Cristata and Yellow Everlastings, following a successful solo exhibition at the Victorian Artists Society in January 2024. I also have work in the permanent collection of the Mental Health Foundation Australia and have been recognized in their National Mental Health Month Art Competitions. Next solo exhibition is coming up on June 2024. Featured artwork : Riverview in Wonderland 60.9 x 91.4 x 4 cm Acrylic on pine frame Canvas. *This artwork was featured in Australia Artist's Palette and Creative Artist magazine No.154, 2017 July as an Artist's demonstration by Woodlands Publishing. * Also, this particular artwork is the only piece that is still available amongst all the featured artworks that were included in the magazine. The other 15 had found good homes. Comes with the last edition of the magazine that I collected if you would like to be the collector of this original artwork. This painting was inspired by nature in Warburton, Yarra River, east of Lilydale, on the road to Mount Donna Buang, it was a calm and quiet afternoon and I was fascinated by the view of the golden sunlight shining on the right side of the trees and the glistening river. In a valley between heavily forested mountains, feel the water flow toward you, you are the one who's on your way. Everything you desire is already yours. Water is the start of life, from Feng Shui's point of view, water is also well known as the symbol of fortune. A nonstop, steady river water flows toward you bringing you great luck and financial abundance. A variety of different colourful foliage symbolized the abundance of life. Banksia symbolizes rebirth, regeneration and new beginnings. Amaranthus, with tiny flowers blooming in cascading clusters creating a weeping effect, is considered a symbol of immortality due to its longevity. Dracula Celosia, formerly Celosia cristata, also known as cockscomb, is the crested variety of the species Celosia argentea. The unusual shape and richly-hued blooms of the flower is not the only reason why it stands out, it’s also believed that celosia is a good omen. Over the past few years, I haven't talked about my background a lot just because I wanted to focus on my presence, even though I never forgot who I am and why I paint. However, I was convinced by a wise man, he said to me: " There's so much happening around the world, I hope you can share your story, it's encouraging and it might have a positive impact on whoever reads the news. You would never know." This wise man is Ron. A sincere thank you to Laurie Nowell, Media Manager of AMES Australia for the invitation and interview, as well as Ron Smith, Media Coordinator of VAS for the help with the Press Release, as well as Gallery Manager Kari, Ann, Lucy and Mark for organizing the opening. I am grateful for all the love I received. So here it is. I sincerely hope you enjoy the article, and have an insight into my art journey " Blossoms of Life". This is a gift for the audience whom I haven't met in person, but plan to visit my solo. It might give you a different perspective while you view the body of work and the whole collection. A Thousand Ways to Love – Acorn Banksia, Eucalyptus, Amaranthus, Celosia cristata and Yellow Everlastings (2023) By HSIN LIN Original Artwork is now available. Artist Acrylic on stretched gallery-wrapped canvas. Signed at the front and ready to hang. Artwork painted extends to all side panels. D rings and wire are attached at the back. Comes with a certificate of authenticity. Sealed with clear varnish spray. 76.2cm (W) x 91.4cm (H) x 3.5cm (D) Affirmation: While there are a thousand ways to say I love you, my strongest love language is always acts of service. To experience the seasons, it has become a routine of mine to paint the first bloom around my surroundings, during its flowering season. This is my depiction of the gorgeous bouquet that was gifted to me by my family and family members overseas as a surprise, during the opening night of my solo exhibition - Bloom Like Flowers, presented by Maroondah City Council at Maroondah Federation Estate Gallery. (Melbourne, Australia) Even the galley curators kept a secret till I saw a large, breathtakingly beautiful bouquet with the crowd during the opening. I was overwhelmed by a surge of various emotions. Words could not describe how happy and grateful I am for all the love and support I received. Sometimes the strongest love may be left unsaid but presents itself loudest in action. Therefore, I chose to express it in the best way I could think of - with my paint brushes and canvas. All the native blossoms bloom gloriously. A precious memory that I will cherish forever. Therefore, I have the title - A Thousand Ways to Love, to say I love you, for this particular artwork. I started this artwork around Dec 2022. It’s been a long journey, sunny days and rainy days. To depict the different textures of those special native flowers correctly, somedays I even had to start all over if I wasn’t satisfied with the outcome the day before. Some of the tepals are velvety, some are furry, and some have woody, rough surfaces or relatively firm textures. The process wasn’t an easy task but It’s a challenge that I always enjoyed. The flowers I painted during day sometimes appear in my dreams. After 12 months of production time, I finally had it completed on Dec 2023. Here I present you the latest piece from my award-winning/signature series -Bloom like Flowers. BANKSIA prionotes, a species of shrub or tree of the genus Banksia in the family Proteaceae, also known as Acorn Banksia or Orange Banksia. In the Language of Flowers, Banksia symbolizes rebirth, regeneration and new beginnings. Amaranthus, with tiny flowers blooming in cascading clusters creating a weeping effect, is considered a symbol of immortality due to its longevity. The name Amaranthus came from the Greek “amarantos”, meaning “unfading”, which also describes the vivid colours of the flowers that can last for weeks while on the plant. Dracula Celosia, formerly Celosia cristata, also known as cockscomb, is the crested variety of the species Celosia argentea. The unusual shape and richly-hued blooms of the flower is not the only reason why it stands out, it’s also believed that celosia is a good omen. Celosia is a symbol of boldness. If you want to wish someone courage, gifting Celosia to the person you care about will send the right message. Celosia flowers also stand for affection, love, individuality, partnership, resilience, and strength. Yellow Paper Daisy, also known as Sticky Everlasting, Shiny Everlasting, or Golden Everlasting. Yellow Daisy stands for youthful beauty and gentleness. Some people look at the daisy to be a symbol of good luck. However, the most popular meanings attached to the daisy are - loyal love, innocence, and purity. As for my all-time favourite - Eucalyptus flowers and gum nuts stand for Healing and Protection. Flowers always bloom in their own time without competing with other flowers. May we all bloom in our time in the best season. Hope you enjoy this artwork of mine. Artwork inspired by nature in Ringwood, Australia, Summer 2023. -HSIN LIN -Bloom like flowers - Hsin Lin’s series Bloom Like Flowers explores the process of blooming and our connection to nature. The signature series features meticulously detailed acrylic paintings that celebrate native and common flora and wildlife and highlight the ecologies and habitats that support and connect them. Hsin Lin’s professional background in fashion design informs her skill and ability to capture the organic textural details of these subjects. Through sensitive observation and illustration every petal, facet or filament is rendered on canvas. Wherever you are I hope you are all staying well. I am back with the 1st blog post of Dec with new artwork fresh off my studio! December is the month that I am about to wrap up my solo exhibition, so if you plan to visit my solo but haven't, make sure you do it before the 20th! :) With the weather getting warmer, I got inspiration everywhere especially since we are blessed with all kinds of beautiful flowers in the season. Featured artwork in the photos : Joyous Heart Forever Love – Waratah, Firewood Banksia, White Protea and Pine (2023) 75 x 75 cm By HSIN LIN Acrylic on Acid-free canvas. Painted with palette knives and brushes. Sealed with clear spray varnish. Side panels painted. Signed at the front and ready to hang. Affirmation: Love goes on in the joyous season. To experience the seasons, it has become a routine of mine to paint the first bloom around my surroundings, during its flowering season. This artwork was inspired by a day trip to Queenscliff, Victoria. This gorgeous bouquet caught my attention. All the native flowers in this flower arrangement bloom gloriously just like the beautiful sunny day that we had that day. The Red Waratah flower (Telopea), native to the south-eastern parts of Australia - New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania, is the symbol of undying love. The bright red Telopea speciosissima is also the NSW state emblem. The inflorescence of Proteaceae is often large, blooming in brightly, vivid colour, consisting of many small flowers densely packed into a compact head or spike. There’s also a saying that the aboriginal people soaked the Waratah in water and drank it as a tonic of strength. The white Protea Niobe (Protea magnifica x laurifolia) has light yellow flowers with trims of soft black, purplish foliage that outline the tips of the petals. Protea is also associated with change and transformation, and diversity. I am especially in love with the story behind the name: In Greek legend, proteas were named after Proteus, the son of Poseidon. A sea god who had the power to know all things past, present, and future. Banksia menziesii, also known as firewood banksia or strawberry banksia. Leaves are dull green with new growth in greyish green. Flowers are often in two-coloured red or pink and yellow. Menzies Banksia is commonly seen in Australian Parks and gardens, it provides food for animals and birds, in particular- honeyeaters. Banksia symbolizes rebirth and new beginnings. To move on from the past courageously, to have the strength to look forward to tomorrow. Leucadendrons are often used to convey an appreciation for simplicity in life. The blossoms are uncomplicated and have a simple appearance to them. Simple beauty is one of the most popular meanings for this bloom. As for my all-time favourite - Pine leaves, are often considered to be a symbol of longevity and endurance because of their ability to withstand harsh conditions. All the native blossoms bloom gloriously. A precious memory that I would like to cherish forever. Therefore, I have the title - Joyous Heart Forever Love, for this particular artwork. Flowers always bloom in their own time without competing with other flowers. May we all bloom in our time in the best season. Hope you enjoy this artwork of mine. I am back with the 2nd blog post of Oct with a Vlog update on my current solo exhibition! Quote from Original post : The Arts Lounge Exhibition - Hsin Lin (Room 2) 18 October - 19 December 2023 Feature artwork : A Lifetime Sunshine - Corymbia Ficifolia / Hsin Lin / acrylic on canvas Lin is inspired by her close observation of the natural world. Through a process of careful looking Lin is able to capture an incredible amount of intricate detail. To create the larger-scale work, Lin normally spends 6-12 months developing the intricate composition. The fine details such as the tiny petals have been developed through ten or more layers of paint. Lin describes that ‘although still-life is considered a traditional genre, each object in the paintings stands for a different meaning and has its own story. Flowers represent us as humans, vases represent the body carrying our soul, protecting us like a shield. Lin’s paintings, a series of flowers in full bloom, remind us that we are alive, and that life is vibrant, blossoming, and full of potential. It’s rich in texture and shines beautifully when you look at the physical painting. Artist Acrylic oncanvas. Sealed with clear spray varnish. Ready to hang. As many of you may know I don’t paint birds very often, but when I do it’s normally a self-projection. Affirmation: Listen to the whispers in your heart. Taking a break is for accomplishing a longer, better journey. There’s also a saying that black cockatoo stands for the energy of empowerment, happiness and contentment. The power of spirit come into our life, a strengthening of our own spirit and soul. Yellow-tailed black cockatoo, a large cockatoo native to Australia. It has a short crest on the top of its head. Its plumage is brownish black and it has prominent yellow cheek patches and a yellow tail band. Body feathers are edged with yellow giving a beautiful scalloped appearance. The adult male has a black beak and pinkish-red eye-rings, and bone-coloured beak and grey eye-rings for the female. I spotted this gorgeous during my visiting to Tasmania last summer with my family. We have a lot of white cockatoos in our area but rarely a black one. We spent quite some time with this little fellow, who was having his lunch before us, peaceful but powerful. It’s a calm and delightful scene to enjoy. As if he was talking to me – Why so hurry? Let’s have lunch first! It’s good to slow down in a fast-paced world. I captured the sight with my eyes and camera, it was a wonderful memory together with my family. During the lock down, I found this photo I took last summer and captured this beautiful friend with my paint brushes, worked in my studio for quite sometimes and finally have it completed. I would like to share the beautiful moment with you, hope this artwork pass you good vibes too. Reminisce on those lovely sunny days by the water by recreating the adventure as a fun mixed-media project. Hsin uses acrylic paints, gesso, gold foil paint, and of course shells. Using simple, easy-to-follow steps, she shows how to make the magic happen. Creating with Hsin Lin: Mixed Media Acrylic Beach Painting In this tutorial, Hsin Lin takes us through step-by-step in recreating her beautiful painting, ‘Seaside Serenity’. 1.First, start by grabbing a flat brush, apply Clear Texture Gesso to prime the seashells. 2..Cover all the shells and wait till they’re dry. 3.Squeeze dollops of paint down the left-hand side of the canvas, and Titanium White Horizontally across the canvas. 4.Starting at the top of the canvas with Phthalo Blue, begin blending left to right until all colours are blended in with Titanium White. 5.Now, go over the canvas again blending until you are satisfied with what it looks like. 6.The next step is to glue the shells to the canvas. 7.Grab a fine tip brush and paint little patterns on the shells with Titanium White and Gold Foil Paint. 8.Finally, using the same fine tip brush and Titanium White, paint vertical lines down the canvas adding a little swirl here and there. LIMITED EDITION Giclée prints are available. Original artwork medium: Artist Acrylic on canvas. Affirmation – The Sun shines on you, have faith in a sunny place. I have this beautiful camellia tree in my front yard which blooms gloriously from every Autumn till Winter. Flowers always bloom in their own time without competing with other flowers. The glossy leaves add shiny-looking foliage with sunlight, along with the gorgeous red flowers and buds, it is captivating. Generally, camellia flowers symbolize love, affection, and admiration. Red camellias symbolize love, passion, and deep desire. The Yuletide Camellia is evergreen, meaning that the leaves stay on the plant all year round. This heat-loving, drought-tolerant Camellia thrives in hot weather conditions, needs minimal watering and can handle long periods with little to no rain. I present you these gorgeous camellias, that bloom gloriously just for you, every day, every season. It has become a routine of mine to paint the first bloom of this beautiful camellia tree every year, this is my 3rd depiction and the former two had found forever home, now you are looking at my latest interpretation of my favourite camellia tree. This artwork is painted during the lockdown in 2020, a special isolation diary that I wrote with my paint brushes. The artwork painted extends to all Side panels. 75 (W) x 75 cm (H) Affirmation: You are my home and love all at once, forever and always. White lilies symbolise purity, virtue, commitment and rebirth, and are often used at weddings. They can also represent a rejuvenation of the soul. In this particular artwork, those subtle, tiny fallen pollen on those silky soft petals, leaf veins and the texture of flower buds are definitely my favourite details. It is such a joy to paint, to study the lights and shades on these gorgeous blossoms. A journey that I have enjoyed so much. It’s a coincidence that I ended up having two lilies in this artwork, which reminds me of our relationship with ourselves, with others and with the world. Having the artwork in this certain location, a place we love and belonged, where children grow, seeing the flowers in full bloom reminds everyone that we are alive, vibrant, and blossoming.” – Artist HSIN LIN.
