How awesome is that ?😊 Quote from original post- Interview with the Artist: Hsin Lin - Bloom Like Flowers Published 08 February 2022 Federation Estate Gallery’s latest exhibition is by local artist Hsin Lin, and explores the beauty of flowers and our connection to them. We interviewed artist Hsin Lin to learn more about her inspiration behind the exhibition, the mediums she uses and favourite flowers. Q: What was the inspiration behind the exhibition? Bloom Like Flowers is a contemporary floral series that I have been developing for years. Bloom like Flowers embraces the diversity and salutes the strength of life by featuring Australian native flowers we love and common flowers we know. It is also a series that I painted to raise awareness of mental health. It encourages people to be nurtured into deeper mindfulness and to cherish the beauty of nature in their local environment. Q: What is your favourite piece in the exhibition? One of my favourite pieces would be the largest piece from my signature series - Bloom Like Flowers, A Life Time Story ‒ Orchids and Roses on Wood Tray with A Weaving Basket (2021). It is also an artwork that took me the longest period of time to complete. Every object in this artwork stands for a different meaning. You may see this work as a documentary of the time that we all went through. When I look into the details in this particular piece, I remember every moment that I spent painting it, sunny days and rainy days. Q: What do you hope viewers get out of your exhibition? I paint flowers to show my happiness and wish to bring positive energy to my viewer. Flowers are celebrations of life. You can see the collection as a reminder that as the flowers are in full bloom, this is our time to be alive. Q: How do you feel your fashion background influences your painting style / technique? To me, there’s one thing in common regarding being an artist and being a fashion designer—that is to appreciate the material that you use, and to explore the possibility of it. Just like designing a garment—you have to think through how the fabrics are attached, how your design will be composed as a whole and give it a new life. As an artist, I sometimes stand in front of the canvas meditating for a long time before my paintbrushes touches it, just to imitate how the flower grows and extends in my mind, following the natural order. Q: What mediums do you like to use? I find acrylic is the perfect medium to interpret my intense passion for the subjects I depict. I love the vivid and opaque property of paint on canvas. In my ongoing contemporary floral series, I use close observation to try to capture as much detail as possible. I do paint with oil and watercolour sometimes to let loose, but acrylic is always my go-to medium. Q: How long does it take you to create a piece of artwork? Artworks from my main series have very intricate compositions and I used a photorealistic approach, with each tiny petal built up by more than eight layers of paint. For large-scale pieces, it takes six to nine months from start to finish. Q: What is it about flowers that you love so much? I see flowers as salutes to the strength of life. Just like every one of us is unique, each flower has a different appearance and different flowering seasons. Each flower looks different, smells different, has its own spiritual meanings. Most important of all, the flower always blooms in its own time without competing with other flowers. That’s the beauty of it and I am absolutely obsessed with the natural order. I believed everything falls into the right places at the right time. Q: What is your favourite flower? My new favourite would be the Australian native flower ‒ Eucalyptus Macrocarpa. I love it so much, that I often visit Royal Botanic Garden just to admire its beauty. The original artwork ‒ A Lifetime Grit ‒ Eucalyptus Macrocarpa (2021) in the exhibition is the 3rd depiction I have done of a gorgeous flowering gum tree in Cranbourne Garden. The former two have found good homes soon after they launched. I especially love the details on the large, ovate grey leaves and the earthy tones of the plant. The rough surface of the gum nuts and the smooth silky texture on the flowers display of greatest strength of life. Eucalyptus flowers also have the symbolic meaning of healing and protection. Seeing a gum tree makes me feel grounded wherever I am and I see it as an anchor. Flowers don’t have to be fragile to be beautiful, they can be strong and tough. To me, Eucalyptus Macrocarpa is the tough kind of beauty. Find out more Bloom Like flowers is showing at Maroondah Federation Estate’s Gallery until Friday 8 April. It is my absolute pleasure meeting all the amazing people. Much appreciated for your love and support. What a great opening event! Below is the full Speech by Artist HSIN LIN on the opening event- “First of all, Thank you, Mayor, Cr Mike Symon, Deputy Mayor, Cr Rob Steane, Maroondah City Council, Arts in Maroondah, and Maroondah Federation Estate Gallery for having me. It’s a great honor. I would also like to say a big thank you to the Curatorial Program Officer, this solo is professionally curated by Gareth Syvret the Curatorial Program Lead, and Andrew Duong. Thank you for everything and thank you for making it happen. Tonight I see some familiar faces. I would like to say hi to new friends, old friends, collectors, friends, and families. Thank you very much for making it to the opening. Words cannot describe how happy I am to see every single one of you, especially after two years of the pandemic. I want you to know that you are important, your love and support make everything possible. Following I would like to give you a short insight into the series- Bloom like Flowers. Bloom like Flowers is a signature series of mine that I’ve been developing for years. Those artworks from the main series have proceeded in intricate composition and photorealism approach, each tiny petal was built up by more than 8 layers of paint. For large-scale pieces, it takes 6 months to 9 months from start to finish. In this series, I don’t care how much time it takes, but I am willing to give it as much as the time it needs to be achieved. Many of you might know I wasn’t an artist my entire life, but I have never dropped my paintbrushes since the day I started. At first, I paint flowers to empower myself, when time goes by, I realized my artwork empowers my collectors, my viewers, and I think that’s the most amazing thing in the world. The best thing I love about flowers is each flower has a different appearance and different flowering seasons. They look different, smell different, have different spiritual meanings. Most important of all, the flower always blooms in its own time without competing with other flowers. Just like every one of us is unique, regardless of our gender, nationalities, and all the differences that you can think of. If we can embrace diversity and all the differences, the world is a better place. You can see it as a reminder that as the flowers are in full bloom, this is our time to be alive. I would also like to conclude my speech with a line from my favourite poem - “Let life be beautiful like summer flowers -By the poet Rabindranath Tagore. To every one of you who visited the exhibition or watching the video right now- Let’s make our life be beautiful like summer flowers. May you too bloom in the best season. Last but not least, all the original artworks in the solo exhibition are ready for new homes. Please feel free to let me or the gallery know if you are interested in any particular ones. Thank you very much and I hope you enjoy the exhibition. “ Solo Exhibition info: Bloom Like Flowers: Hsin Lin Categories: Arts, Council, Exhibitions ➡️ Maroondah Federation Estate Gallery 32 Greenwood Avenue, Ringwood ➡️ View the exhibition: 7 February - 8 April Mon - Fri, 9am - 5pm Hsin Lin’s new exhibition and series Bloom Like Flowers explores the process of blooming and our connection to nature. A early Merry Christmas to all my new friends & old friends. Welcome back to my 2nd blog post of December 2021! ❤️ (And the last one of 2021? Maybe? 😊)
A Lovely surprised in my mail box this morning! Much appreciated VAS for featuring my story on Victorian Artists Society Members' Magazine for December 2021- our second magazine of 2021. I am happy and beyond humbled to be a part of our amazing community. Featured Artwork in the Magazine: A Life Time Story - Orchids and Roses on Wood Tray With A Weaving Basket (2021) Acrylic on Canvas, Ready to hang. 76.2cm (W) x 122cm (H) Quote from original article – Hsin Lin As an artist who is obsessed with the beauty and the form of flowers, I paint every object as a self-projection. During the new Era, time slows down for every individual to focus further on the connection to mother nature and the surrounding around us. I started a special series called ‘The Lockdown Diary’ since the pandemic- a special isolation diary that I wrote with my paintbrushes. It is an extension of my ongoing Contemporary floral series, featuring native flowers we love and common flowers we know. To experience the changing of the seasons and to present moments in the new normal, it has become a routine of mine to paint the first bloom in my surrounding during its flowering season. Most of my inspiration comes from my observation of the natural world. I use close observation to try to capture as much detail as possible. Through my paintings I see flowers as representing life, each different flower and object have their significant meaning and symbolism. Flowers represent us as humans, Vases as the body carrying our soul and physical body, protecting us as a shield in a natural order. In one of my large-scale pieces, which was completed during the lockdown, the weaving basket stands for connections- the bounding between families, friends, all the people around us. Even if we are apart, everyone is still being linked together as a whole, stronger together. Every passenger in our life, every stranger who is meant to cross our path for a reason, plays an irreplaceable role in this life-time story. You may see the work as a documentary of the special time that we came through. Our body kept us strong, alive, and healed, the heroes who keep the world moving. It is also a reminder that as the flowers are in full bloom, this is our time to be alive. Flowers always bloom in their own time without competing with other flowers. May we all bloom in our best season. Welcome to contact the gallery if you are interested in this particular artwork, or simply visit the link here for direct purchase. From where I live in Bayswater, there is a big field of open woodland near my studio. The grassland is always my favourite playground, especially during the lockdown. I often accompanied by varies local birds such as cockatoos, magpies, colourful rosellas, lorikeets and kookaburras during the walk. Pink Cockatoos / Major Mitchell's Cockatoo are hard to miss, with their pink colouring and distinctive red and white crest. These friendly, playful, highly social birds represent inner influence, balance, joy, abundance. I often see pink cockatoos having launch under the winter sun peacefully or fly up to the branches in flock playfully. It’s one of my favourite scenes to enjoy. I captured the magical scene with my eyes, froze the moment with my paint brushes and canvas, worked on it for quite sometimes in my studio. How are you today? No matter where you are, I hope you are safe, happy, and well. I am back with my latest artwork of September! ❤️ Which is also the 252nd artwork off my easel. I've been working on this one for months and I am so in love with how it ends up really. Every time I walked past by this beauty, I couldn't help doing a double-take of it. Artwork painted extends to all Sides. Ready to hang, D rings and wire attached at the back in gallery standard. Comes with a certificate of authenticity. Sealed with clear varnish. 76 cm (H) x 51 (W) x 3cm (D) Affirmation: Listen with your heart, speak with love. To experience the changing of the seasons and to present moments, it has become a routine of mine to paint the first bloom in my surrounding during its flowering season. This artwork is inspired by the Passion Vine that I spotted in my neighborhood closed to my art studio. I was fascinated by those interesting fringed petals and splendorous tendrils; the white petals shine bright like precious gems under the sunshine. Fun Fact of these unusual blossoms - Passion Flower Essence is used to purify and strengthen one’s connection to unconditional love even nowadays. A Truly Special and Symbolic Gift- Passion Flower, was named by Roman Catholic priests In the 15th and 16th centuries for the Passion of Jesus Christ. There were old sayings that the flower's five petals and five petallike sepals represented the 10 faithful apostles. As for the circle of filaments in the center of the bloomsome, stands for the Crown of Thorns. This artwork is painted during the lockdown, a special isolation diary that I wrote with my paintbrushes. Flowers always bloom in their own time without competing with other flowers. May we all bloom in our time in the best season. July update from my studio- a sneak peek of my current public art project. While I am having my 250th painting progressing in the studio, I am pleased and humbled to be notified that this artwork of mine- Capturing Freedom - is chosen by Maroondah City Council signal boxes public art project - Celebrating local cultural vibrancy, on July 2021. It will be printed as a vinyl wrap adhered to signal boxes on the site - corner Eastfield Road and Bayswater Road, adjoining Cheong Park, Box number 626. If you are around the area, make sure to keep an eye for a signal box in vibrant colour! Painting this artwork gave me such a good vibe and I couldn’t wait to see it alive on the local public art project really! Featured Artwork- Capturing Freedom - Pink Cockatoo (2021) 51cm (W) x 41cm (H) x 1.5cm (D) By HSIN LIN Signed at front. Ready to hang. Side panel painted Black Acrylic painting on gesso primed Acid-free canvas As many of you may know I don’t paint birds very often, but when I do it’s normally a self-projection. Pink Cockatoos / Major Mitchell's Cockatoo is hard to miss, with their pink coloring and distinctive red and white crest. These friendly, playful, highly social birds represent inner influence, balance, joy, abundance. I often see pink cockatoos having launch under the winter sun in the park peacefully or fly up to the branches in a flock playfully. It’s one of my favourite scenes to enjoy. This artwork is also painted during the lockdown in Victoria as we are having it again. A special isolation diary that I wrote with my paintbrushes. A Life Time Story - Orchids and Roses on Wood Tray with A Weaving Basket (2021) By HSIN LIN Metallic Gold paint is used. It shines beautifully when you look at the physical painting. Artist Acrylic on triple primed gesso stretched gallery wrapped canvas. Artwork painted extends to all Sides. Ready to hang, D rings and wire attached at the back in gallery standard. Comes with a certificate of authenticity. Sealed with clear varnish. 76.2 (W) x 121.9 cm (H) x 3.5 cm (D) Affirmation: Show appreciation and love and the rest shall come to you. I would like to share the concept behind this piece if you have a bit of time. I started this artwork around February. It’s been a long journey, sunny days and rainy days. Long working hours required determination and faith to be achieved. I spent almost every day studying those intricate compositions and fine details. The process wasn’t an easy task but It’s a challenge that I enjoyed, and I happy to say I finally have it completed in May. By the time I have this artwork completed, I decided to name this artwork - A Life Time Story, which is an extension from my previous award-winning artwork – A Life Time Journey, A Lifetime blessing, and A Life Time Love. Every passenger in our life, every stranger, people who are meant to cross our path for a reason, plays an irreplaceable role in this lifetime long story. This artwork is inspired by a graceful floral arrangement that I spotted in the local nursery. However, the side story- If you look close enough, you may notice from the details that there is something different from my usual approach. In fact, these gorgeous blooms were referenced from artificial/ Man-made flowers. Due to the restriction in the covid era, that was somehow the best that I could get at that time. I decided to be true to myself and to the time we live in, so I painted those as it is, kept the real details and let the viewer know the true story behind the scene. Because we are all part of this story, and the story goes on. We write our story individually, meanwhiles, together as a whole. It is also a reminder of the special time that we come through. Our body kept us strong, alive, and healed, the heroes who keep the world moving. I sincerely hope you enjoy this artwork. My daily painting routine normally start from this stage – Meditating in front of the artwork, sometimes with a cup of earl grey in my hand. By Meditating I mean planning and thinking about how I want to do it before the paint brushes touch the canvas, with a clear mind. Like the inflorescence, like how the leave vines expended. How I shall proceed further, like the nature order – everything has its own order, everything falls into the right place in the right time. This short period of time is so important and I love every minute of it. Fun Fact – I sometimes dream about the flowers I paint, and I considering it a good dream if I have one.
